Learning to Swim, Candy Bouquets and Sweet Surprises

Roughly a year ago I started swimming at a local aquatic center in North Georgia. In that year I’ve learned to improve my stroke, freestyle over a mile without stopping and even flip turn.

Each morning I see the same faces when I enter and exit the women’s locker room. Ms. Marylin and Ms. Arleen greet me at the front desk. Mr. Ken, the maintenance man and all around amazing human being, gives a big wave as he surveys the Olympic size pool. And Mr. Bruce has already been swimming for what seems like an eternity when I finally hop in the chilly water at 6am.

The folks at Francis Meadows have become family. For the short time we’re there each morning, we sure do love each other a lot.

Soaking wet from my swim, goggles all foggy and cap still on my head, I entered the locker room a few weeks ago. Two of my pool friends greet me with two dozen donuts and a candy bar bouquet with three crisp hundred dollar bills folded in decorative little origami bows.

“We’re going to miss you around here.” They say. “Here’s a little something before you go.”

Immediately tears well up in my eyes. It’s been a little over a year now that I’ve come to know and love these women I affectionately call my “pool friends.”

Ms. Mary on the right is 93 years old. The first time we met she explained in the thickest southern accent. “Honey, I’m 92 years old. I used to swim but I lost my kick!”

She’s a hoot and a half.

Brenda on the left is one of the most thoughtful and generous people I know.

I sure will miss seeing them each and every morning.

Because I love to swim so much, a pool was one thing I asked the Lord for over the next 9 months while squad leading. And wouldn’t you know it, my very first night in Romania there was an incredibly gorgeous pool in the hotel I was staying in while waiting to meet up with my squad.

Although I wasn’t there long enough to get a few laps in, it was most certainly a sweet surprise and reminder that He knows me. Every detail. I’m His favorite… and so are you!
